I LEAD! - Certification

To complete certification as one who can truly say “I LEAD!”, a program participant is expected to:

  • Attend at least 5 leadership seminars that cover leadership theory, leadership in action, and ethics. Also, participants will complete assigned leadership readings, providing written feedback on the material.
  • Participate in program activities and workshops (including relevant leadership topics such as team-building, conflict resolution, diversity training, and assessment of one’s leadership skills).
  • Actively and regularly meet with designated leadership mentors to discuss progress in leadership development. This will be determined early in the program by each student’s leadership agenda and area of interest (e.g. research, service, etc.). (By their senior year, students are also expected to serve as a resource for new “I LEAD! at Clemson” participants.).
  • Participate as a public speaker for a sizable audience in a venue that is not course-related. This could also be fulfilled by membership for at least a semester in Clemson’s or another Toastmasters International chapter to develop their oral communication skills
  • Identify, locate, and get agreement from a professional in the area in which they hope to work. The student will shadow that professional in the work environment and provide a written analysis of the experience.
  • Attain a leadership role on campus or within the community by his/her senior year.
  • Either conduct over several semesters a supervised primary research group project that comprehensively examines some aspect of leadership; or initiate, organize, and successfully complete an individual service project that demonstrates service leadership to the University, the communities it serves, or another similar and worthy beneficiary.
  • Complete a leadership portfolio that formalizes the student’s study components and his/her growth throughout the program.
