GC Participates in Summer Enrichment Program

Participants in Graphic Communications Summer Enrichment ProgramWith the many camps and summer enrichment programs on campus throughout the summer, it isn’t unusual to see much younger “students” in our buildings and on the playing fields. During the week of July 17-21, fifteen middle school students participated in a program spanning three colleges offering hands-on experiences in civil engineering, graphic communications, manufacturing, digital video, and space and flight. The “Exploring Engineering and Technology” program was a collaboration of efforts of individuals in the College of Health, Education, and Human Development, the College of Business and Behavioral Science, and the College of Engineering and Science.

As part of the week’s activities, the students spent two half-days in the Graphic Communications labs in Godfrey Hall under the direction of Nancy Leininger. On the first day they printed their own Clemson T-shirt and completed a project designed to teach how to identify the different printing processes used to produce a variety of printed products. On the last day of the program the group returned to the GC labs to produce and print a personalized DVD jewel case cover. Guided by Leininger and a group of Graphic Communications majors, the participants used Adobe CS2 software products to complete the digital layout and optimize digital photos taken throughout the week to be included in the project. The 4-page covers were digitally printed in full-color by the participants. The finished cases, holding a DVD with iMovies created earlier in the week and a slide show of pictures taken throughout the week, were distributed to the students at the closing session that afternoon.
