Archaelogist Continues Work at El Purgatorio
Thanks to the generous support of Clemson University and a private donor, Dr. Melissa Vogel’s archaeological project at the site of El Purgatorio completed a successful second season this summer, in continued collaboration with Peruvian archaeologist Percy Vilcherrez. El Purgatorio is the proposed capital city of the Casma culture, located on the north coast of Peru. The pair was delighted to find an even higher degree of preservation than expected, including embroidered cloth, fishing nets, woven mats, packets of human hair, and an abundance of seeds and dried fruits.
