This fall marks a season of change within the college. We welcomed over 1,000 new students and 16 new faculty into the College of Business and Behavioral Science this semester. In addition to our military and business living-learning communities, we are now offering freshman behavioral science students the opportunity to participate in the Social Science Experience.
We continue to move towards the goals set forth in our strategic plan as we strive to meet the needs of our students and the business community. I encourage you to join us at our alumni events this
year, and I encourage you to reconnect with the
College of Business and Behavioral Science. Your engagement makes a significant impact on the lives of our students and the success of our college.

CBBS Joins European Foundation for Management Development
The College of Business and Behavioral Science at Clemson University joined an exclusive community of business schools and executive education centers worldwide in June. The college’s business programs received membership to the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) in Brussels, Belgium. This is the initial step in seeking European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation from EFMD.
“Clemson has already developed an excellent global reputation,” Dean Claude Lilly stated. “Joining EFMD and seeking EQUIS accreditation is another step in growing that recognition. In a world, where globalization is no longer a specialty, but an integral part of business, it is important that we continue to enhance international opportunities for our students.”
With over 650 members organizations from academia, business, public service and consultancy in over 75 countries, EFMD provides a unique forum for information, research, networking and debate on innovation and best practices in management and development.
“We are excited to join such a prestigious institution, and are looking forward to long term benefits for our students and faculty,” said Dr. Clemens Schmitz-Justen, director of international programs for the College of Business and Behavioral Science.
The College of Business and Behavioral Science is the only university in South Carolina to be granted membership to EFMD. The school joins other nationally ranked programs such as the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. |
Graphic Communications Student Participates in Summit
Graphic Communication student Shaida Blackmon received high praise for her participation in the 2008 South Carolina Education and Business Summit, hosted by SPI and held June 24 at the Carolina First Center in Greenville, SC. The five-day conference welcomed more than 2,300 educators and offered workshops on aspects of the state’s plastics industry presented by SPI, the Fabri-Kal Corporation, Fluor, ITW-Sigode and the National Plastics Center. Blackmon, along with packaging science student Elizabeth Rawl of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, presented on behalf of Fabri-Kal.
“We couldn’t be happier with our interns from Clemson,” said Susan S. Rector, human resources manager for the Fabri-Kal Corporation. Her praise is attributable both to the students’ diligence and innovations and to the internship connections offered through the University.
Nancy W. Leininger, internship coordinator for the Department of Graphic Communications, said that such opportunities drive the department’s continued commitment to building relationships between students and businesses. The department requires that each of its students complete at least two internships before graduation. Leininger added that the department places about 160 students per year with a growing number of corporations.
“By and large, the course graphic communications students say is the most beneficial of their college career is the second internship. And generally, they say the second most beneficial course is the first internship,” Leininger said.
Toward continuing its interning tradition, the Department of Graphic Communications will hold its bi-annual Intern-Employer Day on October 7th. More information on the event, which connects students with 50-60 businesses seeking interns and full-time employees, click here.

First Students Graduate in TREE Program
Audrey Renier, Alexandru Cupsan and Vittorio Pellizzari are the first students to graduate in the Transatlantic Exchange in Economics (TREE) program. TREE is a course of study designed by Clemson’s John E. Walker Department of Economics and the département des sciences économiques of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium. The program is one of several Atlantis programs funded by the European Union and the U.S. Department of Education’s Foundation for Post-Secondary Education.
American universities, such as Indiana University, the University of North Carolina, the University of Wisconsin and Virginia Tech, are partners with European universities to offer dual-degree opportunities for both American and European students. The TREE students are the first to earn Clemson degrees under the Atlantis program.
“The Université catholique de Louvain is one of the world’s best universities,” said Raymond Sauer, chairman of Clemson’s economics department. “It is an honor for Clemson to partner with UCL in the TREE program. The students we hosted from UCL were exceptional in the classroom and I am heartened that they took advantage of the opportunity to learn about American culture during their time here, from New York to D.C. to Savannah and places in between, during their stay at Clemson.
“Our students are doing the same in Belgium and Holland,” Sauer said. “The TREE program is a fabulous opportunity, both for our students and students from UCL.”
Ten students from Clemson are now in the program and will earn degrees from the Université catholique de Louvain upon completing their course of study. Students who participate in the program earn two bachelor’s degrees in economics while studying abroad for 18 months. They study at Clemson University, Université catholique de Louvain and the Universiteit Maastricht in the Netherlands. The curriculum brings together business economics, economic development and international economic policy. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, the students visit major economic institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. The students at the Université catholique de Louvain met with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on a trip to Washington, D.C., earlier this year.
“Institutions like Clemson that have the foresight and flexibility to design programs and issue dual degrees are truly visionary in recognizing that the students of today and tomorrow will need specific professional and language skills that will enable them to work in different international settings,” said Frank Frankfort, U.S. coordinator of the Atlantis Program.

Internships Valuable for Students and Industry
Erin Blank, a senior graphic communications major from Alpharetta, Georgia, has accomplished many things in her time at Clemson. For the last two years, she was the vice-president of marketing and director of public relations for CLEMSONLiVE, where her responsibilities included designing advertisements, banners, fliers, t-shirts and other promotional materials. Blank was also on the inaugural board for Clemson University's first Women's Leadership Conference, acting as committee chair of the public relations committee. A member of the Calhoun Honors College, she is active in the Clemson University Guide Association, acting as a tour guide. With an overall 3.89 GPA and a 4.0 major GPA, she has been on both the Dean's List and President's List throughout her time at Clemson.
The Department of Graphic Communications program requires two internships for graduation. Blank completed her first internship the summer after her sophomore year at Rock-Tenn, one of the largest packaging companies in the United States, where she worked at the headquarters in Norcross, Georgia. As a prepress intern in the Digital Prepress Center, she prepared packages for print and had the opportunity to work on projects for both Mazda and Pennzoil.
In the spring of her junior year, Blank worked for Heidelberg USA, located in Kennesaw, Georgia, the largest producer of sheet-fed offset presses in the world. During her time at Heidelberg, she worked in Creative Services doing in-house graphic design work for the company. While creating promotional materials and assisting with the redesign of Heidelberg’s magazine, Blank received the hands-on training that will benefit for years to come in her professional life.

Alumni are encouraged to reconnect by becoming involved in the Tiger Ties Initiative, which ties CBBS alumni to each other through our network and creates a lifelong tie between the College and our alumni. Tiger Ties also symbolizes our students’ transitions from the classroom into the “suit and tie” professional world.
CBBS relies on our network of students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry partners and friends of the College to create ties that foster volunteerism, intellectual exchange and growth. Tiger Ties offers several ways for alumni and friends to engage with the College and the student body:
CBBS Events are held on-campus and key cities each semester. Alumni are encouraged to attend these events and to learn more about the changes within the College.
The Tiger Ties Online Professional Network is an exclusive resource created for our CBBS community. Through the creation of customized groups, the CBBS community can discuss and share their collegiate and professional experiences. Other features include exchanging messages, creating groups, sharing photo albums and sharing opportunities within the site.
The Tiger Ties Mentorship Program connects our ILEAD! Leadership Certification Program undergraduates with alumni and friends who are successful experienced professionals. Students benefit from the exchange of skills, knowledge and expertise shared by our mentors.
By participating in our Internship Leads Database or one of our departmental industry events, alumni can promote their businesses while recruiting top Clemson students.
Alumni Panels are a popular venue for students to ask questions about life after graduation and learn as alumni give a real world perspective of what they can do with their major.
Recruit Potential Students by hosting or attending high school receptions and/or writing letters to top students to encourage them to attend Clemson University.
