From professors receiving top honors to students traveling the globe, CBBS closed the spring semester with a number of events and accomplishments. We honored our top students, faculty and alumni in several ceremonies held in April, and the semester culminated on May 9 as CBBS students graduated in the afternoon commencement ceremony. A number of CBBS students were actively involved in this year's commencement exercises: Michael Garcia, marketing major, provided the invocation; Amanda McDonald, marketing major and winner of the Clemson Cup Speech Competition, provided this year's student speech; and Kristin Purvis, psychology major, was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, which is given annually in recognition of the recipient's influence for good, excellence in maintaining high ideals of living and genuine service to others. Jason Moss also received the first doctoral degree awarded from the human factors psychology program, and Dr. Daniel Benjamin, professor in The John E. Walker Department of Economics, was named Alumni Master Teacher.

We met with a record number of alumni through our alumni receptions and luncheons this semester. We will continue to meet with more of our alumni as we travel across the country this summer and fall. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

Business Semester in Brussels

For the first time, CBBS is offering a semester-long study abroad program in Spring 2009 at The Thomas Green Clemson University Brussels Center (CUBC) in Brussels, Belgium. The international experience is open to all business majors and business administration minors. Courses will be taught in English by Clemson and approved Belgian faculty. The city of Brussels and its surrounding areas offer countless resources for students to anchor their business courses within a broader perspective through business visits and travel to other European cities.

Vogel Leads Students on Peruvian DigStudents on an Archaelogical Dig in Peru

Under the direction of Clemson anthropologist, Dr. Melissa Vogel, several Clemson students took part in Clemson's first season in an archaeological dig on the north coast of Peru. The goals of Project El Purgatorio are to investigate the changing face of Andean cities, the dynamic role of religion in the development of ancient Peruvian states, to identify Casma sociopolitical organization and to understand relationships between Casma and neighboring polities over time.

Project El Purgatorio was established by Vogel and Peruvian co-director Percy Vilcherrez under the auspices of UCLA's Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. Summer 2008 will mark Clemson's second season of participation and the international research team's fourth season at the site. Thanks to National Science Foundation support, the group will devote the next three field seasons to studying the ancient urban environments.

To learn more about the students' experiences in Peru, see the summer issue of the CBBS Magazine.

Moss Receives First PhD in Human Factors Psychology

On May 9, Jason Moss received the first doctoral degree granted in Human Factors Psychology. His dissertation, Characteristics of Head Mounted Displays (HMD) and Their Effects on Simulator Sickness, investigated typical display features of an HMD virtual environment and their effects on simulator sickness and presence. Rather than using a computer generated virtual environment, Moss' dissertation examined these characteristics within a real-world captured scene that is displayed via an HMD.

Moss was awarded the 2007 Clemson University H. W. Close Distinguished Graduate Fellowship, which is awarded annually to two outstanding graduate students. He was also the 2005 recipient of the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) doctoral-level scholarship. I/ITSEC promotes cooperation among the armed services, industry, academia and various government agencies in pursuit of improved training and education programs, identification of common training issues and development of multi-service programs.

Wall Street South Investment Club Provides Students with Hands-On Experience

The Wall Street South Investment Club provides students with experience in trading securities (stocks, bonds, options) and understanding how capital markets work.

According to advisor Kerri McMillan, the group’s mission is for students to gain experience by performing portfolio simulation. Each student is given a mock portfolio of $100,000 to manage over two semesters. Trading begins in September and ends in April. The top ten portfolios are posted weekly, and the top three portfolios are rewarded at the end of the year.

In addition to managing portfolios, the group’s activities include presentations from investment professionals in the field such as portfolio managers, brokers and investment analysts. Past presentations included representatives from UBS Securities, The Investment Center and Vanguard Mutual Fund Services. The club also visits the CU Trading Room to learn techniques such as stock screens.

The Wall Street South Investment Club is open to all majors at Clemson University. Currently, the club has 70 members; membership is open to students in the fall.

“This is a high-energy group of students who learn it is tough to beat the market, which in our case is the S&P 500 as a proxy for the stock market. Students learn a lot about risk and putting ideas into action. It is very gratifying to me to be the faculty advisor for this distinguished group of students,” said McMillan.
