The Department of Political Science continues to sponsor the Globalization Seminar series. Topics for Fall 2006 included “A Better, Safer World: Stopping the Spread of Nukes and Other Deadly Weapons” by Matthew Martin, Program Officer for Policy Analysis and Dialogue, The Stanley Foundation as well as seminars by Clemson University faculty.

The John E. Walker Department of Economics hosted Edward P. Lazear as the 2006 Harris Distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics.  Professor Lazear is the Jack Steele Parker Professor of Human Resources Management and Economics at Stanford, and the current chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisors. In addition, the department hosted the 2nd annual Clemson Symposium on Economic Development where economics faculty Scott Baier, Robert Tamura and Robert Tollison were joined by Daron Acemoglu of MIT and Stanley Engerman of Rochester, two of the world's pre-eminent scholars in the theory and history of economic development.

Lambda Alpha Epsilon, which is advised by professor of sociology Marjie Britz, hosted Al Lewis, director of cyber crime and computer forensics at the Offices of the Inspector General, Treasury Department, Department of Justice.

Aleda Roth, Burlington Industries Chair of Supply Chain Management, was invited to participate in the 2006 Kellogg Operations Workshop at Northwestern University. Her presentation, “From Observation to Theory in OM Empirical Science” was one of ten invited speakers from institutions such as MIT, Wharton, Northwestern, and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Varun Grover of the management department was the Plenary Keynote Speaker at the 4th Annual Conference on Information Technology and Management in Chandigarh, India in July 2006. The conference was sponsored by the Information Institute (USA), the Confederation of Indian Industries, and the Management Development Institute (India).

Laura Olson was interviewed on CNN as well as for stories in The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

Marie Nix, assistant director of the CBBS Academic Advising Center and lecturer in psychology, was an invited speaker as well as discussion panelist at the Oxford Roundtable on Child Psychology at Oxford University in July 2006.

Aleda Roth, Burlington Industries Chair of Supply Chain Management, will spend five weeks as a guest of the London Business School and the Advanced Institute of Management Research. While in London, Roth will conduct a major Survey Research Operations seminar and lead a Service Science Workshop for leading research academics, industry executives and government officials in the United Kingdom.

Curtis Simon and John Warner of the Department of Economics presented their research on military manpower to the National Defense Working Group of the National Bureau of Economic Research in the Spring of 2006.  In addition, Todd Kendall presented his research on the impact of the internet on crime at the NBER's Law and Economics Summer Institute.

Ami Hood, CBBS Business Officer, received certification from the College Business Management Institute, a three-year program sponsored by the University of Kentucky and the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers.

Meredith McTigue, Director of MBA Career Services and Alumni Relations, and Amanda Brock, Director of CBBS Communications, will participate in Leadership Clemson, a program which fosters community involvement and leadership.
