Doctoral Students Receive Recognitions
Doctoral students in the Department of Management have received recognition both on- and off-campus during the Spring 2008 semester. Pamela Galluch and Samuel Otim were awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award Fellowship. Nick Roberts was awarded the University Graduate Teaching Award.
Galluch and Roberts were also accepted to the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) consortium. Clemson was the only school in the world to have two students accepted to the AMCIS doctoral student consortium.
Roth Named One of the Most Productive MS/POM Scholars in Nation
Dr. Aleda Roth, Burlington Industries Professor of Supply Chain Management, was ranked as the eleventh most productive research scholar in the world in the management science/production and operations management (MS/POM) field by the H-index ranking analysis of 1,376 MS/POM professors in the United States. The unpublished study by researchers at DePaul University compile the H-index, which provides an estimate of the importance, significance and broad impact of a scholar’s academic achievement.
Roth Invited to Speak in Bavaria
Dr. Aleda Roth was an invited speaker at the 2008 German-American Journalist Program, Schloss Elmau, Bavaria in April 2008. Sponsored by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Transatlantic Relations and the Robert Bosch Foundation, this program distinguishes itself by creating a new network of key journalists addressing key domestic and global issues affecting citizens on both sides of the Atlantic. Dr. Roth was tapped for her expertise in global food supply chains.
King Elected to Planned Parenthood Board
Dr. Bruce King, chair of the Department of Psychology, was elected to the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood Health Systems, which covers South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
Muth Receives Humboldt Fellowship
Eric Muth, a psychology professor at Clemson University, has received a Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Foundation.
The foundation is a non-profit organization established by the Federal Republic of Germany for the promotion of international research cooperation. It enables highly qualified scholars not living in Germany to spend extended periods for research in Germany and promotes the ensuing academic contacts. The fellowship will support a year of research. Muth will work with his German sponsor, Paul Enck, director of research of the Department of Internal Medicine, Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the University Hospitals Tübingen. Muth and Enck will research eating disorders.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to build international collaborations and get reacquainted to a research area that I have been away from for some time,” Muth said.
Accountancy Professor Receives Fulbright Award
Richard Dull, professor in the School of Accountancy and Legal Studies, was a 2008 Fulbright recipient. Richard Dull, an associate professor of accounting at Clemson University, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach and research at the University of Dubrovnik in Croatia, according to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Dull will study strategies to improve learning in accounting classrooms. He plans to work to increase students’ repertoire of cognitive learning tools and measure students’ awareness of their learning methods. While in Croatia, Dull also will teach accounting for non-accounting majors. The course will include extensive technology examples as well as ways to use an accounting system to detect fraud.
Clemson Renaissance Center Recognizes Outstanding Alumni
Two Clemson University graduates were recognized for their entrepreneurial spirit at a ceremony held in April.
Bill Masters and Joe Turner participated in the third annual “Celebration of Clemson Alumni Entrepreneurs” on Thursday, April 10, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Greenville.
Masters is president, owner and/or partner in several businesses, including two kayak companies, Kinetixx, Inc. and Evolution Kayaks, and several real estate development operations. From 1974 to 1978 he was the owner and founder of Perception Kayaks in Easley, during which time Perception became the largest kayak manufacturer in the United States. Masters is a 1974 Clemson graduate with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
Turner, a 1971 alumnus with a bachelor's degree in industrial management and an master's degree in management (1977), is the co-founder, chairman and CEO of First Sun Management Corp., one of the largest Wendy's franchise owners with 50 restaurants in the Southeast. First Sun Management is listed in the Monitor 200 as one of the 200 largest franchised restaurant operators in the country. The company also is listed among the 100 largest privately held businesses in South Carolina.
The event is a Clemson Renaissance Center activity and is sponsored by the Spiro Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership, both of which are housed in the College of Business and Behavioral Science.
Two graduate students from the Industrial - Organizational
Psychology programwere selected as Fellows for the Fifth International
Positive Psychology Summit, held in Washington D.C. The fellowship
competition drew research entries from around the world.
Tiffany Greene-Shortridge presented "The
Assessment of Psychological Stamina," co-authored by faculty
member Tom Britt, graduate student Erik
McKibbin, and undergraduate Courtney Smith.
Laurie Wasko presented "Predicting the Pleasant
Life, the Engaged Life, and the Meaningful Life: An Empirical
Integration of Affective Forecasting and the Good Life," co-
authored by faculty member Cindy Pury.
Dr. Mary Anne Taylor and Jenifer Greene, a
graduate of the Industrial-Organizational Psychology doctoral program,
published their article “Predicting the retirement adjustment of
military retirees: The central role of expectations” in the
Journal of Applied Social Psychology in 2006.
Dr. Mary Anne Taylor and Holly Geldhauser, a doctoral student in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, published “The challenges facing lower income workers: Problem identification and practical solutions” in a forthcoming book, Aging and Work in the 21st Century, by K. Shultz and G. Adams.
Tobin Turner (Ph.D. student in Operations Management) won 1st place at both the Regional and National levels (beating out submissions from 14 other national and international regions) in the Graduate Student Division of the Donald W. Fogarty International Student Paper Competition conducted by APICS - The Association for Operations Management. Tobin won for his paper entitled "The Key to Toyota's Success: Effective Organizational Learning." Tobin's paper was nominated for the region award by the APICS Industrial Crescent Chapter in Greenville.
Jason Thatcher, Misty Loughry, Jaejoo Lim (PhD student), and Harrison McKnight (of Michigan State University) have had their paper titled Internet Anxiety: An Empirical Study of the Effects of Personality, Beliefs, and Social Support accepted for publication at Information and Management.
A recent article (Clark, J.G., and Warren, J., "In Search Of The Primary Suppliers Of IS Research: Who Are They And Where Did They Come From?", Communications of the Association for Information Systems, Vol 18, 2006) has recognized Varun Grover as the 3rd most productive researcher (of 2,401 authors) in 3 leading IS journals based on an assessment of 2,401 authors that published 1,486 articles. He is ranked 4th using a broader set of 7 top journals.
Nick Roberts, a second-year doctoral student in Information Systems Management, along with professors Jason Thatcher and Rich Klein had their paper "Mindfulness in the Domain of Information Systems" accepted for presentation and inclusion in the workshop proceedings at the Fifth Pre-ICIS DIGIT Research in the highly competitive MIS Workshop.
For the second issue in a row, a Clemson-authored paper has been selected as the showcase article by Decision Sciences, and will be featured prominently on their website ( https://wpcarey.asu.edu/dsjOnline/). Following the selection of the paper "The Dark Side of Information and Market Efficiency in E-Markets" by Varun Grover, Jaejoo Lim, and Ramakrishna Ayyagari as the showcase article for Vol. 37, No. 3, August 2006, Aleda Roth's paper (coauthored with Xiande Zhao and Barbara B. Flynn) "Decision Sciences Research in China: A Critical Review and Research AgendaFoundations and Overview" is the showcase article for Vol. 37, No. 4, November 2006.
Frances Kennedy, professor of accounting, received the 2006 International Federation of Accountants’ Award of Merit for her distinguished contribution to the field of finance and management. Kennedy also received the 2006 Institute of Management Accounting’s Lybrand Silver Medal for outstanding contributions to management accounting literature.
Grover and Otim Article Published in EJIS
Varun Grover and his doctoral student Sam Otim had their
article "An empirical study on Web-based services and customer
loyalty" accepted for publication in European Journal of
Information Systems. EJIS is widely recognized as one of the top
two European journals in information systems.
Navy-Funded Urban Military Operations Research At
Clemson Continues
Prompted by the increase in military confrontations on
urban terrain—as opposed to open rural settings—the U.S.
Navy has commissioned Clemson University professors with research
relevant to that training need. (Read more)
Narayanaswamy Runner Up in Business Technology
Management Institute Dissertation Competition
Ravi Narayanaswamy, a doctoral student in the Department
of Management (Information Sysytems track), was recently named runner-
up in the Business Technology Management (BTM) Institute Dissertation
Competition. The award comes with a $5,000 stipend to support
Narayanaswamy’s dissertation research, "Exploring the
Dynamics between Information Technology and Business Managers: A
Control Loss Perspective." (Read more)

Released in 2007
White collar crime is an unfortunate reality for the
management world. In attempts to better understand this phenomenon,
Clemson University professor of management Terry Leap explores it in

David Bodde Edits Book On The Science of Risk In
Business
Clemson University professor David Bodde is the editor of
a book on applying scientific principles of risk to business ventures.
The newly-released book, “Managing Enterprise Risk: What The
Electric Industry Implies for Contemporary Business," explores business
risks by asking what elements of a venture are known, unknown, and

Dr. Aleda Roth, Burlington Industries Professor of Supply

Management Student, Faculty Win Best Paper
Xingxing Zu (a recent Ph.D. graduate now at Morgan State),
Larry Fredendall, and Tina Robbins received the Chan K. Han Best Paper
Award from the Operations Management Division at the Academy of
Management conference in Atlanta for their paper, "Organizational
Culture and Quality Practices in Six Sigma."
Roth Named Operations Management Scholar
In August 2006, internationally acclaimed scholar Dr.
Aleda V. Roth was named Operations Management Scholar by the Academy of

Master of Real Estate Graduates First Class
In May, the first six students graduated from Clemson
University’s new Master of Real Estate Development (MRED)
Program. The full-time, 54-credit, two-year professional MRED program
is jointly offered by the Department of Planning and Landscape
Architecture (administrative unit) in the College of Architecture,
Arts, and Humanities and the Department of Finance in the College of
