Academic Advising Center - Advising Bulletin

All Clemson University students are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration. To assist you with meeting this requirement in a timely fashion, the Academic Advising Center will begin pre-registration advising for the spring semester in October and the fall semester in March. Please review the information below carefully so that you will know what to do, where and when to do it.

Scheduling a pre-registration advising appointment

The Academic Advising Center has full-time professional academic advisors to meet with students throughout the year. However, during the time-crunch of pre-registration advising, it is absolutely necessary that you plan ahead and schedule an appointment with an advisor. Advising appointments are apportioned into 30-minute time slots. We begin accepting advising appointments via electronic calendar in October for spring registration and in March for fall registration. An email announcement will be sent from the Advising Center when the electronic calendar is available. You may access the calendar appointment link from the Advising Center’s web page.

The Academic Advising Center is located in G-01 Sirrine Hall

How do you know which advisor to see?

The Academic Advising Center provides advising services to:

  1. All freshmen in political science, psychology, sociology, and economics (BA only)
  2. All freshmen transfer students in political science, psychology, sociology, and economics (BA only)
  3. All students in the Pre-Business Program.

All other students in the College of Business and Behavioral Science will be advised in their major department.

All advisors in the Academic Advising Center can assist you. However, during Pre-Registration Advising students are assigned to specific advisors. When you log on to the appointment calendar, you will be automatically directed to your assigned advisor’s calendar.

Exceptions

All athletes who are 1) freshmen behavioral science majors or 2) Pre-Business students of any classification should schedule an appointment with Col. Sandy Edge. A sign-up sheet for Col. Edge will be posted in Vickery Hall. All appointments will be conducted in the Advising Center.

During Pre-Registration Advising we will accept appointments only from students currently in the College of Business and Behavioral Science. We will begin taking advising appointments for students wishing to change their major into Pre-Business or one of the behavioral sciences the end of November. Until then, meet with your regular advisor to get your advising materials and complete the relevant advising worksheet for your intended major. The worksheet will guide your course selection during registration.

Advising Schedule

Pre-registration advising appointments are available from mid-October to mid-November. Advising appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 4:00 pm on-line.

How to prepare for your pre-registration advising appointment

Our primary goal is to provide you with high quality, professional academic guidance for navigating the often confusing intellectual waters of collegiate life—but we need your help to do our job. Here are several things you should do prior to meeting with an advisor.

Gather Your Resources

If you have not already done so, create a file in which to store all information you have received from the University regarding your academic career. This should the appropriateUndergraduate Announcements, a current Intended Major “What If” Degree Progress Report (DPR) , academic advising forms, final semester grade reports, etc. This file will serve as your protection against the occasional bureaucratic error.

Investigate Your Information Links with the University

Clemson University has a great web-based information access system for students that can serve you well. From the Clemson Homepage (http://www.clemson.edu/), locate the SIS/Registration (TigerWeb) link under the Current Students Homepage. The TigerWeb page offers two options, SIS on the Web and Web Registration. The SIS (Student Information Services) page gives direct access to your records at the University; this is where you will find your current DPR. The Web Registration page is where you go to register after you have been advised. You can familiarize yourself with the registration system now, however, by clicking on the registration demo system link at the bottom of the TigerWeb page. It is to your advantage to become familiar with the multiple resources available through the Clemson Homepage portal.

Plan, Plan, and Plan Again

The Spring/Fall Semester Schedule of Classes is currently available on the Clemson Homepage. Using the resources you gathered above begin planning which courses you need and want to enroll in for the spring semester. This will require that you familiarize yourself with the rules, regulations, and requirements outlined in the Undergraduate Announcements. Review all requirements for both general education and your major. Specifically, read carefully those sections pertaining to your major. For each course that you anticipate taking in the spring, check the Undergraduate Announcements to make sure that you have met all prerequisites. If the system allows you to enroll in a class for which you have not met the prerequisites, you may be dropped from the course after the semester begins. Because of high demand and limited class space, some courses are filled quickly and early during registration. Therefore, it is important that you create a master course plan that’s flexible-have a reserve list of other courses that fit into your master plan just in case you cannot get your first choices.

Student Responsibilities During Advising

Please bring your coursework plans and any other materials you may want to review with your advisor to your advising appointment.
