Dr. Balakrishnan's teaching interests include Spreadsheet-Based Decision Modeling, Business Statistics, Project Management, and Operations Management. His current research focuses on capacity allocation models, problems related to configurations of supply chains, and studying the impact of business process outsourcing.

Dr. Balakrishnan is lead author of the textbook Managerial Decision Modeling with Spreadsheets and has published extensively in leading academic journals. He serves as Senior Departmental Editor of Production and Operations Management and served as Secretary of the Production and Operations Management Society during 2007-09. He has won numerous awards for teaching excellence both at Clemson and at Tulane, and has also received several awards for his research publications. Dr. Balakrishnan has taught in the Executive MBA programs at Tulane University and the University of Georgia.

He was previously Chair of the Department of Management at Clemson, and served on the faculty at Tulane University prior to joining Clemson in 1994.
