RECENT AWARDS & HONORS
  • Zeynep Taydas received the 2009 Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Business and Behavioral Sciences, Clemson University
  • Zeynep Taydas has received a Faculty Award of Distinction from the National Scholars Program, Clemson University (2009)
  • Zeynep Taydas has been selected to participate in the Olympia Summer Seminars in War, Conflict, and Identity in Olympia, Greece (July 1st through 15th, 2007).  This program is organized in collaboration with Yale University's Program on Order, Conflict, and Violence.
  • Vlad Matic was recently recognized for Excellence in Teaching at the 2007 Graduating Scholars Dinner of the National Scholars Program at Clemson University.
  • Zeynep Taydas has been selected as Clemson University's participant in the ACC-IAC program on "Post-Conflict Reconciliation and Reconstruction in Africa" during Summer, 2007.  
  • Jeff Fine received the 2006 Pi Sigma Alpha award for Excellence in Scholarly Writing  for the best paper presented at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the Southern Political Science Association.  His paper "Studying the Effects of Voter Turnout: Data and Measurement"  is co-authored with James M. Avery (Richard Stockton College) and D. Stephen Voss (University of Kentucky).
  • Xiaobo Hu spent the summer as Visiting Senior Fellow at the University of Wollongong in Australia.  He continues his research on privatization and the rising middle class in China.

RECENT AND UPCOMING MEDIA APPEARANCES

  • Laura Olson has recently participated in an online roundtable on the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.  The topic of the roundtable was "Religion and Progressive Politics in 2008."  Watch it here: http://pewforum.org/events/?EventID=181.
  • Laura Olson has recently been interviewed for stories appearing in
    The New York Times, Washington Post Magazine, USA Today, and the St. Petersburg Times.
  • Laura Olson, political science professor at Clemson, appeared on CNN on Tuesday, October 17th as part of a special called "Welcome to the Future," hosted by CNN anchor Miles O'Brien. Olson discussed the feasibility of a third party breakout in politics, as well as political trends and issues.

PROFESSIONAL OFFICES HELD

  • Joe Stewart is currently serving as Vice-President of the Southern Political Science Association (2006-07 year).  He is Past-President and member of the Executive Council of the Southwestern Social Science Association.
  • Zeynep Taydas has been elected as Vice-Chair of the Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Migration Section of the International Studies Association (ENMISA).  In addition, she is chairing the Awards Committee for  ENMISA's Martin O. Heisler Graduate Student Paper Competition.
  • Laura Olson continues to serve on the Executive Council of the Southern Political
    Science Association and the Executive Council of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion.  She was also recently elected secretary of the Women¹s Caucus for Political Science-South.

OTHER FACULTY NEWS

  • Dr. Bob Smith, Director of the MPA program spent the Fall 2006 semester traveling across the globe spreading the news about the growing Clemson MPA program.  Dr. Smith  attended conferences in Milan, Italy and Puebla, Mexico.  In September 2006 Smith attended the European Group of Public Administration Annual Conference in Milan, Italy where he presented a paper on “Performance Measurement for Ethics and Anti-Corruption Programs” and he recently returned from a November 2006 trip to Puebla, Mexico where he attended the Seventh Congress of the Americas Conference where he delivered a presentation on “"Ethics and Political Symbols: The Basis for Comparative Cultural Analysis.”  Commenting on his recent trips Smith said “Participation in these international conference events are wonderful opportunities to advance scholarship and learn about developments in the field of public administration worldwide, but are equally opportunities to promote the Department, College and University across the globe and to gain exposure for the Clemson MPA program before international faculty and prospective students.”  International interest and inquiries about the program continue to increase.
